Scuba Junkie SEAS – Mabul Turtle Hatchery
Scuba Junkie SEAS is a not-for-profit marine conservation organisation based in Malaysia.
The Mabul Turtle Hatchery, established in 2011, effectively combats turtle egg poaching by engaging the local community. Through a reward system, locals are incentivised to report nesting turtles, allowing trained Honorary Wildlife Wardens to safely relocate nests to the hatchery. This successful initiative has protected over 337 nests and facilitated the release of more than 22,870 hatchlings.

Dear Nautilus Scuba Club Cairns,
Thank you for adopting a turtle nest from the Mabul Turtle Hatchery!
The eggs you’ve helped protect are now safely incubating in our hatchery, giving them the best possible chance of survival. In just a few weeks, the hatchlings will make their way to the sea, beginning their long journey into the open ocean. If all goes well, some may return to Pulau Mabul decades from now to nest as adults.
Green turtles are listed as endangered & Hawksbill turtles as critically endangered by the IUCN and are particularly vulnerable due to the demand for their beautiful shells. Our turtle hatchery works to protect these incredible animals at the earliest stage of life. Since 2011, the Mabul Turtle Hatchery has released over 18,000 baby Green and Hawksbill turtles—a number we’re extremely proud of!
Your donation enables us to continue protecting and caring for turtles around the island, and to work with the local community to ensure more hatchlings make it safely to the sea.
If you would like any more information on our conservation programmes or community initiatives, please do not hesitate to get in touch—and thank you again for your support!
Best wishes,
Scuba Junkie SEAS
